The Ministry of Health (MOH) Malaysia is committed to enhancing the number of medical specialists to fulfil the healthcare needs of our nation. In separate discussions between the Ambassador of Ireland to Malaysia, HE Orla Tunney, the Deputy High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Malaysia, Mr David Wallace and I, all parties agreed to fortify the ongoing partnerships between MOH and the involved institutions.
Pending the Cabinet’s decision on the proposed amendment to Act 50, MOH is also steadfastly dedicated to ensuring that individuals who have successfully completed their training under the Parallel Pathway programme will be eligible for registration as specialists under this act.
Given the critical shortage of medical specialists in public hospitals, MOH intends to request the Cabinet to expedite the proposed amendment, ideally by the second sitting of the third session of the Fifteenth Parliament in June 2024, for prompt implementation. Concurrently, efforts to bolster specialist training through home-grown master’s programmes will be intensified to augment local capacity-building.
Therefore, MOH urges unwavering support from all for the stakeholders, particularly trainees in the Parallel Pathway programme and individuals relying on their services. Building upon the spirit of Malaysia MADANI, MOH will remain unwaveringly determined to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of public health services for the betterment of everyone.
